Arsene Wenger says English players are the new 'masters of diving'

Responding to Mauricio Pochettino's comparison between match tactics and diving, Wenger said during his pre-match press conference on Thursday: "I am convinced he wanted to say tricking your opponent is to be clever".

Yet Wenger, who also spoke out against Manchester City's England worldwide Raheem Sterling earlier this season, believes it is English players who have become the "masters" of diving.

"I don't think he would".

"I remember there were tremendous cases here when foreign players did it, but I must say the English players have learned very quickly and they might even be the masters now". We want to get diving out of the game.

"In my personal case I don't encourage them to dive at all".

"Every striker will do that".

Arsene Wenger is likely to be forced into making a change ahead of Arsenal's north London derby clash against Tottenham Hotspur after Petr Cech suffered a calf injury during their win over Everton on Saturday (3 February).

Arsenal are also expecting Nacho Monreal to return to the defence against Tottenham on Saturday following illness.

The game is the first time Wenger has taken Arsenal to play Spurs at Wembley, a ground where the Gunners traditionally thrive, winning the FA Cup final in 2014, 2015 and 2017. "We feel we have a good level of performance at Wembley".

"It's a big game because we are behind in the table and we have to catch up", added Wenger.

Arsenal head in to the weekend action sitting four points adrift of fifth-placed Tottenham and a further point behind fourth-placed Chelsea so they desperately need a positive result against their rivals to stay in the hunt for Champions League qualification.
