Talks between Ramaphosa, Zuma enter third day

Bongani Ngqulunga, South African President's Spokesman said the President, Jacob Zuma was not holding any special cabinet meeting as speculated in the local media.

The first statement said Zuma is attending routine cabinet committee meetings‚ while another said he would officiate at a high-profile event on Saturday.

"President Jacob Zuma and I began direct discussions on the transition and matters relating to his position as the president of the Republic", Ramaphosa said in a statement.

He spoke to News24 on Tuesday evening after the ANC's announcement that the much-anticipated national executive committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for yester'day, had been postponed.

Magashule would not confirm whether Zuma had agreed to resign, although other ANC leaders indicated that the deal that was struck would see Zuma "go in a dignified way".

Mr Ramaphosa, who promised to fight corruption when campaigning to be the ANC's next leader, will be its candidate in South Africa's presidential election.

"We were saying to President Zuma on Sunday that we don't want two centres of power, we want president Ramaphosa to take control not only of the ANC, but also the affairs of the state".

However, a date has yet to be set following Speaker Baleka Mbete's postponement of Sona, while ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed for patience from frustrated South Africans.

In previous years, opposition lawmakers have shouted Zuma down and been ejected from the chamber by security guards in a melee of flying fists.

They would have been part of the pomp and ceremony associated with the State of the Nation Address that was meant to have taken place on Thursday.

Independent political analyst Ralph Mathekga told AFP that Zuma's departure had been mishandled by the ANC.

At a hastily convened media conference after the meeting‚ Mthembu said that Ramaphosa had addressed the caucus but would not divulge what the president of the ANC had told MPs.

His presidency has been dominated by an economic slowdown, record unemployment and allegations of corruption.

The South African rand has been among the best performing currencies globally since December previous year.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation has also urged him to step down.

Mr Ramaphosa, 65, is a former trade unionist who led talks to end apartheid rule in the early 1990s and then became a multi-millionaire businessman before returning to politics.
