Erdogan rejects opposition call for contact with Assad

According to state-run Russia Today, Erdogan briefed his Russian counterpart on the latest developments in Turkey's ongoing incursion into the Kurdish-held canton of Afrin in northwestern Syria.

Erdogan blasted the US for its military presence in Manbij with fighters from the People's Protection Units (YPG), the armed wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which Ankara sees as a terror group affiliated with the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has been fighting for autonomy in Turkey's southeast.

Defying the USA warnings, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday vowed that Turkish troops would expand cross-border military operations from Syria's Afrin to Manbij.

The Kremlin on Wednesday did not rule out holding a summit between presidents of the three countries "if needed".

The Turkish and Russian leaders reportedly also agreed on establishing and speeding up the process for new observation posts near the de-escalation zones in Idlib and exchanged views on the Astana process.

The war, which began with a crackdown on protests against Assad's government, has killed hundreds of thousands of people and driven millions for their homes.

Turkish foreign minister added that "one of the main goals of the United States in the region is to influence Iran's and Turkey's growing friendships", adding that the two countries must continue to work on resolving regional problems, especially in Syria together.

"The coalition conducted strikes against attacking forces to repel the act of aggression", a coalition spokesman said.

"There have been some small steps in certain human rights cases but violations have continued hitting prominent civil society figures, social media users, medical staff, the list goes on", the head of the EU's diplomatic service, Federica Mogherini, told the assembly in Strasbourg.
