Cordeiro elected US Soccer President after third round victory

Cordeiro's election drew a line under the first contested election for the USSF presidency since 1998.

Solo's bid fell short as Cordeiro won the presidency, garnering almost 70 percent of the vote, but her message didn't fall on deaf ears.

Part of that rebuilding should include some of the very people Cordeiro faced off against in the election. Many assumed and were proven correct that if Carter hadn't won after the first ballot, it would be hard for her to win.

Former MLS and USA men's national team players turned television analysts Kyle Martino and Eric Wynalda also were in contention, along with lawyers Steve Gans and Michael Winograd and retired US players Hope Solo and Paul Caligiuri.

Boston attorney Steve Gans and Michael Winograd completed the field.

The fate of the Athletes Council and whom it will support remains an unknown.

Among the six, Wynalda and Martino gained the most traction.

The election took three rounds and while Cordeiro led all three ballots, he achieved the winning majority (50 percent plus one) in the third round with 68.6 percent of the vote. The council was considering three candidates: Carter, Cordeiro and Kyle Martino. Carter and Martino both had 10.6 percent with Carter having slightly more votes. The group of 20 current and former national teamers, which controlled 20 percent of the vote, decided in the final 12 hours of the campaign to vote as a bloc for Cordeiro. Carter's share dropped to 33.3 percent and another candidate, Winograd, withdrew from the race.

It didn't really matter who was elected, the reaction to the victor was going to be negative. "The establishment is backing two candidates who represent continuity, who represent, not change, and who will deliver more of the same-failure on the pitch, chaos and conflict off of it and not the progress that we need".

Cordeiro will take over for Sunil Gulati, who has served as the federation's president since 2006.

That Gulati didn't succeed in leading his chosen successor to the victory was the biggest news on Saturday.

When asked why he's a better fit than the other seven candidates running, Cordeiro said he's "different" and "unique", before launching into a detailed explanation of his platform and how his experience sets him apart.

"I am a proud American, but I am an immigrant", said Cordeiro, 61. They are concerned he will bring "more of the same".

American soccer can't afford Cordeiro to be a status quo president.

So now that Cordeiro has been elected, what happens next?

The AGM concludes with Saturday night's Anniversary Dinner (7 p.m. ET, ussoccer.com, Facebook and YouTube) where former Women's National Team goalkeeper Brianna Scurry and former player, coach and referee Dr. Joe Machnik will be inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Leslie Osborne, who had been at the Athlete Council meeting in October, just had a baby and missed the election. For 10 years, Carlos Cordeiro was in a position to create change, and he did nothing.

His ultimate goal is to help soccer realize its vast potential in the United States he said.

"Thank you to those of you who have supported me today", Cordeiro said. "And we could use that power of the athlete to make a statement in a time of discourse, and all the separation and all the vitriol and everything that's going around U.S. Soccer right now, that we had the ability to push our power behind someone and show that the athletes were in strength behind a single candidate and I think that's what ultimately got us that consensus". Sure, being USSF President is a powerful position but if you look at it up close, you'll wonder why anyone would want the job in the first place.
