Scotland bounce back to beat France in Six Nations

France, once one of the powerhouses of the European game, are on a run of seven matches without a victory but under new coach Brunel they produced a vastly-improved defensive performance against Ireland, stopping the visitors from crossing their try line.

France - 15 Geoffrey Palis, 14 Teddy Thomas, 13 Rémi Lamerat, 12 Geoffrey Doumayrou, 11 Virimi Vakatawa, 10 Lionel Beauxis, 9 Maxine Machenaud, 8 Marco Tauleigne, 7 Yacouba Camara, 6 Wenceslas Lauret, 5 Sébastien Vahaamahina, 4 Arthur Iturria, 3 Rabah Slimani, 2 Guilhem Guirado, 1 Jefferson Poirot.

So his frustration was understandable as his men missed three opportunities to halt Thomas scoring the first try after just three minutes.

Laidlaw, who was replaced as captain permanently at the start of the year by John Barclay after almost seven years at the helm, will win his 60th cap for his country and will attempt to get a re-jigged back line firing on all cylinders after failing to live up to their attacking reputation on the opening weekend.

Scotland had to score next, and they did. But Scotland didn't take long to hit back. "We've seen a response from the players in training this week and that needs to continue into and through the 80-plus minutes of the match, because France will pose a massive and immensely physical challenge".

And they did just that, with tries from Sean Maitland and Huw Jones providing the ideal response after Teddy Thomas' blistering pace had twice cut them apart.

He may take the kicking duties at Murrayfield from scrumhalf Maxime Machenaud, who struck two penalties for France against Ireland. The hosts can be expected to come out firing in attack after the criticism they received this week and look worth support to cover a three-point first-half handicap at Evens. Penalties: Machenaud (2), Serin Baptiste (2).

Both coaches went to their benches in search of a game-changer, both equally desperate for a victory. Scotland had all of the running and won another penalty in kickable-range in the 70th minute. France made it easy for the home team, constantly giving away penalties in the ruck. "We put a team out to perform". It was their undoing and with five minutes left Laidlaw kicked yet another.

France's discipline continued to let them down, though, with Laidlaw making no mistake with two more place kicks to draw the scores level at 26-26 heading into the final 15 minutes. Scotland will now head to Twickenham energised after a morale-boosting win.

Thomas then grabbed his second try of the game to extend France's lead, chipping the ball before reaping the benefits of the bounce and racing clear.
