Winter Olympics: Mikaela Shiffrin raring to go, FIS confident for races

The start of Mikaela Shiffrin's bid for multiple medals at the 2018 Olympics was delayed yet again when the women's slalom was postponed from Wednesday to Friday in South Korea because of strong winds.

The women's event was scheduled to start at Yongpyong Alpine Centre in PyeongChang, 180 kilometres east of Seoul, at 10:15 a.m on Monday but the organisers chose to postpone the event due to high winds and bad weather.

It's the second time in these Olympics that the event was postponed because of weather. North Korea's Kim Ryon-hyang was also set to make her debut.

It's the third time in four days an alpine skiing race was shelved because gusts made it too unsafe for competition.

The rescheduled event will coincide with the men's super giant slalom in Jeongseon. According to the Denver Post, Sunday's giant slalom was re-scheduled for Wednesday meaning Shiffrin would finally begin competition on Wednesday if all goes as planned.

Seth Rubinroit of NBC Olympics noted Shiffrin became the youngest Olympic slalom champion in Sochi and proceeded to sweep the ensuing slalom gold medals at the World Championships.

It is this event which has delivered Taylor who lowest FIS points results, achieving top 10 finishes at Alpen Tour and US Super Tour races over the last three years.

"We've been through this before in the World Cup quite often", said USA coach Paul Kristofic. I'll use this time to continue to train and refocus on Wednesday's slalom race. "She has now been on snow for four straight days with the postponed races".

The slalom is a race Shiffrin has dominated for five years, including her Olympic gold as a teenager and three consecutive world titles.

"It is unfortunate that we weren't able to race today, but it is important we have a fair race for all of the athletes and today's conditions would definitely not have been fair".

Of the weather delays, Paul Kristofic, the women's head alpine coach, said: "Everyone is a little bummed out when a day like this happens, but they do happen, so we're quite used to it". "So neither of those were achievable today".

The conditions have cause both concern and debate - particularly after the International Ski Federation put off some skiing events, but not the women's snowboard slopestyle, which saw dozens of riders fall on their runs two days ago.
